Rewire for Optimism: Open the Windows!

It’s spring. Time to open the windows!

Slam! There goes another door. Some days, it can feel like bad luck, missed opportunities, or losses are never-ending. Grief is real and valid. First, take time to grieve it.

When the right time comes, looking for positive things that happened because of the loss can be valuable in helping us move forward.

EXERCISE INSTRUCTIONS:

Think of times when you lost out at something important, when a big plan collapsed, when you failed to get a job you wanted, when you were rejected by someone you loved. When one door closes, another one almost always opens. Consider three doors that closed on you. What doors opened?

Try to fill in these blanks:

The most important door that ever closed on me was _________________________________ and the door that opened was _____________________________________

A door that closed on me through bad luck or missed opportunity was________ and the door that opened was ____________________________________

A door that closed on me through loss or rejection, was __________________________ and the door that opened was ____________________________________
